Deputy Stage Manager

Assistant Stage Manager- the first paid job I landed was in the production of Waswasa- a show about Muslim prayer in the modern secular society and the story of a persons growth and conflicts with religion. This performance was an immersive theatre on the round experience, with the performance being a mixture of film and acting in the space where audience members were encouraged to sit on the ground. The main set piece was a rock pool that was in the centre of the performance space which audiences were greeted by as they reached the end of the entrance tunnel

The Decision

Another work experience opportunity I have gotten is being an ASM on The Decision, an opera based off communism where the performance takes place in a found space where the audience take part in this theatre on the round type performance. I have experienced working on theatre in the round during the commonwealth games welcoming ceremony and have found it to be completely different to traditional theatre as you may have to interact with audiences which you wouldn’t do at all in traditional theatre. There is a lot you have to look out for such as audiences interacting with things they shouldn’t be/ are in the way of an actors cue. I think this opportunity was incredibly fun as it is a lot more practical work involved when carrying out cues and contained a lot of spontaneity as each performance was different to the one before.

The Nutcracker- Birmingham Royal Ballet

I worked as stage hand in the nutcracker production starting November 2022 during tech rehearsals which offered a great insight into working in the professional environment. This paid job took place over the course of three weeks/ the full running of the ballet performance in Birmingham. I am very grateful for this experience as I hadn't had an opportunity like this before, It was a great learning experience and I also met great people along the way.

View From The Bridge

View From A Bridge is a play set around the 1950s in a rundown area of New York where poverty heavily resides in. It follows a deep and riveting story following a small Italian family and their run in with Immigration. It centralises around a young and vibrant Catherine who is the niece to Eddie Carbone who’s very overprotective over her, her aunty Beatrice or referred to ‘B’ and the lawyer who narrates the story, Mr Alfieri. The story is based on Catherine’s developing love for one of the Immigrants that are temporarily moving in with them who is Rodolfo, accompanying him his brother Marco. Obviously with Eddie being overprotective over Catherine you could imagine he wouldn’t be too happy with their blossoming love- we as the audience watch his disapproval slowly build up throughout the play. In this show I was the ASM, in charge of sourcing and making props whilst carrying out many cues during the show.
